Jordan Pond House Acadia National Park

They eventually built the Jordan Pond House in 1847 and planted a small apple orchard. In 1895, Thomas McIntire took over the business and eventually bought the entire property. McIntire maintained a highly manicured lawn, incorporated a series of flower beds and foundation plantings, and cleared vegetation within the lawn area allowing for uninterrupted views to the Bubbles. In addition, the landscape included vegetable gardens and an orchard.

Please follow posted rules and regulations when visiting to help protect park resources. On June 21, 1979, the original Jordan Pond House building was destroyed by fire. Through the work of the Island Foundation, private funds were contributed to build a replacement, which was completed in 1982. The original farm house was constructed by the Jordan family, locals for whom the pond and house were named. Give yourself 30 to 45 minutes to find a parking spot during the busy hours and summer. You can work off a tiny bit of popover goodness by walking along the walking trail by Jordan Pond.

Entranced with the area, he made it his home as soon as he could. In 1901, he began the quest to set aside land on the Island to become a National Park. Through land donations and monetary donations used to purchase land, Dorr slowly acquired most of the island in a public trust. In 1916, the federal government accepted the donation of this trust and President Woodrow Wilson declared it a National Monument. Dorr became the first superintendent, continuing to acquire land and lobby for the Monument to become a Park.

In the new kitchen, what looks like a country cupboard beneath the bar holds a dedicated icemaker, while an indoor barbecue nestles in a “cabinet” of rock and concrete. In the shower, the image of a cowboy fishing from a rock amid swaying reeds plays out in river rock and colorful bits of tile. Wallpaper leaves and a genuine tree trunk set into one corner complete the idyll. To create a natural surface on the kitchen floor, Alden mingled fractured shell tile with river rock. When Karen asked for a concrete sink with a trout motif, Alden went one better, carving fins and tail into the wooden counter and lining the sink with a mosaic of flowing water.

The McIntire's ran the restaurant from 1895 to around the 1940s when they retired. John D. Rockefeller Jr. purchased the property and donated it to the National Park Service. The restaurant was a great addition to the park and Rockefeller's Carriage Roads. Jordan Pond House in Acadia National Park is the perfect place to enjoy a popover with a great view. There is a reason this restaurant has been running for over 100 years. The current building was constructed through the fundraising efforts of the local, non-profit Island Foundation.

“My dream was to be able to look out my kitchen window and see my horse,” she says with delight, pointing at the yard with its paddock, barn and chicken coop. ” Raised in La Cañada, Karen often accompanied her father, who was involved in the publishing of Photoplay and Motion Picture magazines, to Hollywood sound stages. The first time she saw a crew shooting a television commercial, the proverbial bolt of lightning struck. Everywhere, the earth tones of rich wood glow, and the eye catches on some cowboy- or trout-related treasure from the past. There is a profusion of spice boxes, tin signs, archaic utensils, leatherwork, vintage tack, framed photographs and fat bouquets of flowers. Throughout the old farmhouse, Karen and Jon have created a décor reminiscent of a bygone era, yet with modern conveniences cleverly integrated.

A 20-minute drive from Bar Harbor, Jordan Pond House is on Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. Turn Right onto Jordan Pond Rd./Park Loop Rd, where you’ll find the restaurant. Seeing attractions like the Jordan Pond house are always more impactful when seen from above in our aerial tour of Mt. Desert Island. This photo was taken at Jordan Pond in the central part of Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park. The same image may also be ordered as a print, cellphone case, throw pillow, blanket, bath or beach towel, even a shower curtain or face mask.

Things to know when planning a visit to Jordan Pond House

Many hiking trails, carriage roads, and the Park Loop Road provide access to the Jordan Pond House. The original building burned down in 1979, and the current restaurant building was built in 1982. The original farmhouse on the property was completed in 1847 by George and John Jordan. Today, the Jordan Pond House landscape continues to provide a view of its role as a scenic, recreational destination. Jordan Pond is one of the park's most pristine lakes, with outstanding surrounding mountain scenery. Much of the photography that I do within Acadia National Park is done very early in the morning.

‘The first popovers and tea were served here by Mr. and Mrs. ‘Thomas and Nellie McIntire around 1895. They were responsible for the character and atmosphere of the original Jordan Pond House, with its birch bark dining rooms and massive fieldstone fireplaces. Probably her largest work of art to date is her home, the historic Trout Farm, located centrally in the Santa Ynez Valley. Since buying the property in 1991, she has restored the house—built by the Hanley family in 1886—enlarged rooms and brought the 1940s-era trout pond back to sparkling life. In 1839, George and John Jordan acquired the property and ran a sawmill business, harvesting timber from the surrounding hillsides.

Some of the bridges are the most visited and photographed sites in Acadia. Upon completion of the current building in 1982, tea on the lawn has been an uninterrupted summer tradition. “I was so ready,” she admits, “and I was so, so, so in love with the Trout Farm. I still love it madly.” Thanks to the careful ministrations and lively personalities of Karen and Jon, the Trout Farm lives on, full of love, warmth and merriment. With imagination and skill, they have redeemed a worthy property and preserved a beloved piece of Valley history.

If you entered the Park Loop Road at the beginning on the northeastern side of the island, it is a matter of just continuing around the loop until you arrive. A quicker way from Bar Harbor is to go west on Route 233 then access the Park Loop Road there. Go directly south past the entrance to Cadillac Mountain until eventually arriving at Jordan Pond (on the right). If on the southern side of the island, take the Stanley Brook Road entrance to Acadia National Park in Seal Harbor and continue north. This will connect up with the Park Loop Road just south of the Jordan Pond House. During peak season, it can be difficult to find a parking spot.

We highly recommend taking time to relax with a popover and soak in the view of Jordan Pond. This was one of our favorite things to do in Acadia National Park. The current restaurant and gift shop building was built in 1981. Popovers and tea have been served at Jordan Pond House since 1895 when Nellie McIntire started baking them in this spot. The original farmhouse was built by the Jordan family of Seal Harbor.

The Jordan Pond House landscape is a 42-acre site situated on the southern end of Jordan Pond, an inland lake bound by Penobscot Mountain, Pemetic Mountain, and two rounded mountains called The Bubbles. The landscape is part of Acadia National Park on the eastern coast of Maine. The Jordan Pond House site has been a scenic, recreational, and dining destination since the early nineteenth century. The current Jordan Pond House, which dates to 1982, is a replacement of the original 1847 house.

For people wanting to hike the Shore Trail, you may want to park in the North parking lot. No swimming is allowed nor are pets allowed in the water as this is the water supply for Seal Harbor. Jordan Pond is a glacier formed tarn with a maximum water depth of 150 feet (46 m). There are steep inclines on the left and right sides (West and East).

Jordan Pond House is located on the picturesque southern end of Jordan Pond. It has been a scenic, recreational, and dining destination on Mount Desert Island since the nineteenth century. The house serves tea and popovers, as it has since the 1890s, in addition to other dining options. For most park visitors, afternoon tea on the lawn at Jordan Pond House remains a popular tradition.

Adults-only Cruises for a Kids-Free Getaway at Sea

virgin voyages cruise line

My friend’s husband read too many comments about “swingers,” “in-cabin toy packages,” and other tales that made him wonder why we chose Virgin. We, and the people we met on board, laughed at those exaggerated stories. When my best friend suggested we needed some one-on-one girl time, we knew we wanted to spend a week in the Caribbean sun and escape winter’s wrath. It just so happened that Virgin Voyages, which has only been in operation since the pandemic, had recently launched a 7-night itinerary from San Juan to island hop in Antigua, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, and St. Lucia.

Along with the new appointment was announced a capital raise of USD 550 million (~EUR 512M/~GBP 440M) with funds managed by Ares Management's Private Equity Group. As of 2023, Ares had ~US$49,2 billion of AUM/assets under management. In late-October 2019 was approved the agreement for Brightline Miami to be rebranded "Virgin Trains" and Virgin Group to build a train station (Virgin Trains PortMiami) at the cruise port. The new station serves high-speed trains and connects PortMiami directly with the USA's intercity railway system and Orlando International Airport. Join Virgin Red and you can earn up to four Virgin Points per pound when booking a Virgin Voyages cruise via Virgin Atlantic Holidays.

A gratuity for your therapist after a spa treatment is encouraged but discretionary. Complimentary classes include sunrise yoga, spin class, or an HIIT workout; you can even book a guided hike in port. Throw a one-two punch at the outdoor boxing arena, or simply unwind at The Perch, an al fresco wellness space. Fitness and wellness are concepts that were heavily considered when developing Virgin Voyages, and guests will notice ample space—both indoors and under the open sky—to take advantage of both.

During the ceremony were also revealed the ship design and hull art of the future Virgin "Lady Ships". Earlier in 2016, Virgin settled US$300M lawsuits filed by Colin Veitch (former NCL-Norwegian CEO), who claimed Virgin had stolen his ideas and moved on with the cruise line concept without him. In 2020, Virgin Cruises officially started operations (from Miami Florida USA) with the 2800-passenger Scarlet Lady. Three more sisterships were inaugurated in the following years - Valiant Lady (2021), Resilient Lady (2022) and Brilliant Lady (2024).

But our fears were for naught because even during our one at-sea day, Valiant Lady never felt crowded. RockStars get the first access to book restaurants and experiences and are moved to the front of the line for any shows that do not require reservations. Considering the booking window opens 45 days before the sailing date, and that passengers in the know set their alarms to begin booking as soon as the app launches, this first access alone can be worth its weight. Whether you choose to jumpstart the morning with a wheatgrass shot from Gym & Tonic or a Filthy Mary from The Red Bar, you can trust that any path you take will remain unobstructed by little feet. We’re proud of our design-forward eateries and bars and we created them specifically for adults, either for mingling with like-minded adventurers or for cozying up and reconnecting with the person you came aboard with. On top of the spaces themselves being kid-free havens, the menu items served within may also be a little advanced for the average tyke.

Fares are also inclusive of dining (shipwide / 20 options, some 24-hour), unlimited WiFi, all fitness classes. For 5-day itineraries, fares start from ~USD 250 pp per day (excluding taxes-fees). Sea-Rovers are guests who have sailed twice between January 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023. Upon a third voyage, these loyalty guests gain access to the Deep Blue Extras as well as additional onboard credit, and more. Sea Blazers sailed in 2021and are rewarded for participating in the cruise line’s inaugural season with automatic access to all perks, including a $125 credit added to any $300 bar tab purchased, for life.

All your exercise classes are included too, as well as your food and basic drinks, and tips for Virgin Voyages’ crew. Explore iconic sites along the Red Sea and the Mediterranean on this 14-night one-way voyage from Dubai to Piraeus (Athens). After experiencing the modern wonders of the Arabian Gulf, you’ll cross the Suez Canal and reach the stunning Greek coast. With late-night stays in Safaga and Alexandria, plus full days in Rhodes and Santorini there’s plenty of time to soak up the history, revel in the desert sunshine and get your island glow going.

Friend groups, solo Sailors, and duos alike can get in on the Insider action. Roomy Rainshowers and mood lighting punctuate our cozy escapes — giving you the space to recover today and prepare for tomorrow. Extra bathroom space with completely separate toilet and rainshower chambers. Whether you're in the Peek-a-Boo shower inside, or rinsing off on the Peek-a-View shower outside, the ecstasy-inducing sea views pulse through every part of the design of this suite. The diversity was evident with and felt by the passengers and crew, and it seemed everyone was simply happy to be together at sea. I miss Valiant Lady and her crew and hope to sail with Virgin Voyages again soon.

V-Ships Leisure is responsible for Virgin ships' technical support/management and crew sourcing. As part of the company's sustainable travel policy, Virgin banned single-use plastics and there is no buffet food on the ships. All shipboard food is made-to-order - to reduce waste and lower energy consumption and emissions. Savings are reinvested into fresh (locally sourced) top-quality products, exotic ingredients, highly trained staff, and clean technologies.

A Virgin Voyages cruise isn’t just for the 20-somethings but the young spirited, inviting anyone who is open to a good time to set sail. Marketed to individuals who might have never cruised before, the passenger mix is an eclectic one spanning coasts and generations, friend groups, couples, and single people. Inclusion is a focus, so expect solid representation from the LGBTQIA+ community. There is a 24/7 diner onboard for late-night cravings, as well as an ice cream shop and coffee house. The idea of room service has been replaced by Ship Eats, a set menu that is operated by the app and can be delivered anywhere onboard for a $5 surcharge. As an adults-only cruise line, the minimum age is 18, but passengers in their 70s and 80s were also onboard the Greek Islands cruise.

In October 2016, "Virgin Cruises" was rebranded as "Virgin Voyages". At the time it was first announced, the company's founder Branson said his goal was to create a brand cruising experience that is more likely to appeal to millennials and other people who don't normally take cruise ship vacations. Bain Capital (1984-founded) is based in Boston (Massachusetts USA) and specializes in private equity, venture capital, credit, public equity, life sciences and real estate, with assets (under management in FY2018) ~USD 105 billion. I’ve sailed a variety of cruise lines throughout the years, beginning with my first voyage as an 18-year-old living in Fort Lauderdale when my mother took me on a nighttime sail. Back in those days (not to date myself), you could get on a ship out of Port Everglades and go into international waters to drink and gamble.

Swap your athletic shorts for a flowy skirt or trousers, and trade your sneakers for a more formal pair of shoes, like chunky heels or loafers for a put-together look. Market trends play a crucial role in determining the prices of cruise ships. For example, if there is a high demand for luxury cruises, the prices will likely be higher. On the other hand, if the market experiences a downturn and fewer people are interested in cruising, prices may decrease as cruise lines strive to attract customers. One thing to keep in mind when considering a cruise vacation is that there are hidden costs involved in owning a cruise ship. While the initial purchase price of a cruise ship may seem like the biggest expense, there are many other ownership expenses to consider.

What Psychological Factors Are Typically Behind Individuals Jumping off Cruise Ships?

Your cruise outfits will be as fun to wear as they are to look at. Alaska Cruise Outfits: June What to Wear, Packing List 2024

alaska cruise attire

The first time I sailed to Alaska was from Seward to Vancouver in July. The second cruise was roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska in August. The most recent time I sailed to Alaska was a round-trip cruise from Vancouver in May. I am often traveling the world or exploring nearby New England, both on my own o with my family. You may find us star gazing in national parks, taking a cooking class in Marrakech, exploring Europe, or relaxing at a luxury hotel. If you want to have data while travelling for online maps or any other needs, an esim is one of the easiest solutions.

My Evening Cruise Outfits

If you are flying into the starting port and checking your bag, I highly recommend adding an airtag to your suitcase to track it. Also, pack at least a couple of outfits into a carryon just in case. I’ve had airlines lose my luggage before and it’s a nightmare. Cruises move pretty quickly so it might have a tough time catching up to you and it’s best to have a couple of options on hand worst-case scenario.

Activities You Will Participate In

💡 If you are planning a cruise during a different month, read our Alaska Cruise Outfit Guide for May, June, July, August, and September. While it could be tempting to sleep in, we advise starting your port day earlier rather than later. Although the service comes with a small fee in addition to any airline baggage fees, it offers unparalleled convenience for travelers. Should your cruise encounter rough seas, an itinerary change, or another unforeseen circumstance, there’s a chance a showtime could get canceled or rescheduled. Booking reservations for earlier in the week ensures you have wiggle room in case of an unanticipated schedule change. When booking entertainment reservations, we recommend sticking to shows earlier in the week.

We were on the Norwegian Encore and stopped in ports in Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan in southeast Alaska, and Victoria, B.C. Chances are, you’ve been dreaming of and saving up for an Alaska cruise for quite some time now. Juneau can get down to 30° Fahrenheit in March, with a high of 65° Fahrenheit in July. High temperatures in Ketchikan range from the high 40s in April to the high 50s in September.

Must-Have Accessories to Enhance Your Alaska Cruise Outfits

Waterproof hiking shoes will keep your feet dry and comfortable as you explore rugged terrains, trek through glaciers, and walk through trails in Alaska. Depending on the time of the year, a rain jacket is a clothing item to pack for your Alaska cruise. If I was cruising to Alaska in June, July or August, I would have brought mine and layered it on top of a long or short sleeve shirt. You’ll want to pack short sleeve and long sleeve t-shirts, to wear under a fleece sweatshirt or hoodie. During my cruise, the temperature during the day was usually about 50F to 57F, so I almost always wore a lightweight puffer jacket as well. Bring one or more hats for your Alaska cruise shore excursions.

Alaska Cruise Packing: Frequently Asked Questions

We were told multiple times that our good weather was unusually warm for Alaska, so I think this was just good luck. We found the restaurants and main dining room to be chilly and it is a good idea to bring a sweater or wrap in the evenings. Keep in mind that the ship photographers are available to take family photos so you may want to coordinate one nice outfit for each.

Imagine yourself standing on the deck of a majestic cruise ship, surrounded by breathtaking scenery of glaciers and snow-capped mountains. These cruises offer incredible opportunities for whale watching, as you sail through picturesque landscapes aboard luxurious ships. Whether you’re going into town at one of the Alaska cruise ports or relaxing on board, you’ll want some comfortable basics to get you through the day. To be safe, I recommend packing waterproof clothing year-round to prepare for the potential of rainy days.

You can minimize your luggage by trying to pack apparel you can mix and match, such as tops and bottoms in the same color family. For example, a loose pair of black jeans could work over thermals for an excursion and then pair with a nice top for evening dining. For men, dinner outfits should also be a consideration, a pair of slacks paired with a button-up shirt and dress shoes is a great outfit for most nights at dinner. A blazer is another good versatile piece that can be worn in the evenings onboard your Alaskan cruise. In my experience on Alaskan cruises, people are less concerned about what they wear at dinner each night because they’ve had a long day exploring the ports.

In Alaska, on the other hand, you will want to lower your expectations when it comes to weather. It’s challenging to predict whether your cruise will encounter sunny skies and 70 degrees, or seven days of straight rain. Sure, booking your cruise in June usually results in better weather compared to one in September, but weather conditions are never guaranteed.

Planning your cruise vacation outfits for an Alaska cruise can be a bit of a challenge. Even if you’ve been on a cruise before, planning and packing for an Alaska cruise is quite different. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably wondering what to wear on an Alaska cruise. Packing for Alaska cruise shore excursions can be the most daunting. If you book your desired excursions prior to your cruise, the listings will tell you if you need specific equipment or clothes. Having the appropriate shoes for the adventures you book is crucial.

I prefer to wear a jean jacket on travel days since the airplane is normally cold. Most importantly, you want to be prepared for cold weather and rain. Of course, the weather is fickle and you may end up warm so dress in layers that can be added or shedded as needed.

Another good option for hiking or wandering on wet days is rain pants. We didn’t purchase these for the trip, but I did see others wearing them. Rain gear is essential when cruising through Alaska, as the weather can be unpredictable.

We have all of them right here for you, so you can focus on having fun and enjoying all this jaw-dropping state has to offer. And if you’re going on an Alaska cruise in August or onwards, don’t forget to pack long sleeve shirts. One pair of casual walking shoes – I own a basic pair of black and white Nikes and they usually go with me on any trip. These are great for airports, and even walking around the ship with your joggers and a hooded sweatshirt. A light jacket – I found this great jacket from The North Face and LOVED it. It was perfect for the cruise and perfect for any other travel I do that involves cold weather.

Interior venues on Carnival Breeze include a comedy club, piano bar, casino and showroom for big production shows. The dining options are similar to what you'll find on many Carnival ships, including an extra-charge steakhouse and Italian eatery, Cucina Del Capitano, as well as no-extra-charge main restaurants. It also has a sushi restaurant and a version of Carnival's Caribbean-inspired watering hole, RedFrog Pub. It dates to 1998 and is the oldest cruise ship regularly sailing out of Galveston.

It has more of the feel of the ships you find in the fleets of Norwegian's higher-end sister brands, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises — albeit on a bigger scale. Most Carnival Breeze sailings out of Galveston stop at Cozumel, with some adding a stop at Costa Maya, as well. Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Breeze is the Galveston-based ship to pick when you're looking for a quick and affordable getaway — something that isn't a big commitment and won't break the bank.

Best for Disney fans: Disney Magic

As is the case with all Princess ships, it's more of a ship geared toward middle-aged and older travelers without kids, including lots of retirees. Based in Galveston year-round, the 11-year-old vessel operates short four- and five-night voyages to the Western Caribbean that are often on sale for under $500 per person or less. For off-peak travel, we sometimes see five-night sailings for sale for around $300 per person — or just $60 a night. This is a third of the cost of similar five-night sailings on Disney Magic.

Harmony of the Seas will operate the same itinerary as Allure of the Seas does now. Princess® returns to Galveston, sailing once again from this city tucked within a quaint Gulf Coast barrier island. The upscale turn included loading Norwegian Prima with an unusually large variety of suites (13 categories in all), including what the line says is the largest three-bedroom suites of any recently unveiled cruise vessel. If it's swanky digs you're after (and you have the money to spend), you'll find plenty of options on this ship.

GALVESTONCRUISES.COM: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, & Disney Cruises from Galveston Texas

For would-be Galveston cruisers, Carnival Breeze serves as a sort of "test the port" ship. Its short sailings and low pricing mean you're not out a lot in time or money if you don't love the experience. It caters heavily to first-time cruisers, as well as Texas locals and Southerners who can book on short notice and drive to the port for a quickie escape. Before getting on a cruise from Galveston, start your vacation with a visit to the city’s museums, historic neighborhoods, and cultural icons.

Carnival Breeze also offers a water park with waterslides on its top decks, a miniature golf course, a sports court for basketball and volleyball, and multiple pools. One of three ships in the line's Dream class that date to the late 2000s and early 2010s, the 3,690-passenger Carnival Breeze is no longer the newest or snazziest ship in the Carnival fleet. At around 130,000 tons, it's about 29% smaller than Carnival's newer Excel-class ships and has fewer venues, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spaces.

Galveston Island is a gem for Texas tourism — and it’s easy to see why. Fascinating history, well-preserved 18th century architecture, gorgeous beaches and thrilling outdoor adventures. Experience all this and cruise out of Galveston with Travel Weekly’s Best Cruise Line Overall 19 years running.

One overhaul to Disney Magic not too long ago brought such cutting-edge features as the AquaDunk — a 37-foot-tall body slide that careens over the side of the vessel — and a new outdoor kiddie fun zone called AquaLab. We have the answers so your first  time will be nothing but smooth sailing. Remove the hassle from air travel and give yourself the gift of flexibility, time and a thicker wallet with Princess EZair flights.
